Q&A with Camille Favre

All the way from Lille, France, Camille has headed up North to support the team as Associate Director for What Goes on in Front of Closed Doors.

Tell us a bit about your experience with theatre.

I started theatre from a very young age, as my mum, who was an English teacher, organised a theatre club at her school. She enrolled me, without any decision from me, as it was a way for her to keep an eye on me. I did that for four years and then stopped theatre in high school. When I moved to Paris, I got an itch, wanting to start theatre again. After this I went to LIPA, where I met Emma, and at the end of this amazing place we decided we wanted to work together and created our company joue le genre, @jouelegenre on Twitter. It all started as a workshop, with a show called TROLL, which was about the role of women on stage and the representation of women. We worked with five actors from LIPA for a week and presented a scratch presentation at the end of this.

What is it like running a company across countries?

I don’t know… It has been a bit frustrating because I haven’t been involved as much as I want to be, but this is something that we want to work on as we go further. It is incredibly difficult.

What do you think of the show and what do you hope audiences get out of the show?

I think the show is brilliant. No, in all honesty it is a very powerful, moving story that avoids the pitiful of being ‘preachy’. That is one of the main qualities of the show- it tells a story, it talks about something important and it does it all with heart. It is something you root for from the beginning.

What are you excited for in your first trip to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

I’m excited that I can stay for the whole month and can be relaxed. I came up for a few days a few years ago and it was too stressful. I want to approach it in a more relaxed manner rather than having certain things to tick off the list.

Who out of the team is most likely to be kicked out of a venue?

Definitely not me.
